What type of career options are available for lawyers specializing in international law?
Also, what is the average salary.
Is it an in demand field?
Please include any other information you can give me about this type of law.
I am about to attend law school next year. I am thinking about specializing in corporate law or international law. I love business and originally wanted to obtain a law degree/MBA combo to help me in the future with my business endeavors. The problem with this is that while I enjoy business, I think as a lawyer International law interests me far more than corporate law. I cannot see myself being a long term corporate lawyer. I also know I will have to practice law for a while after I receive my degree so that I can pay off student loans.
Would specializing in International Law also help me with business?
Any lawyer have any advice? If you are a corporate lawyer or International lawyer I would love to speak with you.
Thanks for your help!
I hope this helps you. I’m an attorney, graduated a few years ago. What I learned is that you don’t really specialize in law school. After the first year, you can pretty much take what you want. I took courses that I knew would be on the bar and found that to be very helpful.
Corporate law is a first year, one semester course. Depending on your school, there may be additional business courses but before you worry about specializing, review carefully the courses and course descriptions offered at your law school and you may want to talk to someone in the career office for more specific information about your school.
The bar is generally the bigger challenge. Once you have passed the bar, I don’t know of many people who are focused on what courses you have taken.
As the dean of my law school said on our first day of law school. “You are not here to learn the law. You will learn that in bar review. You are here to learn how to think.”
That statement floored me and it took me a good three years to figure out what he meant. But he was exactly right. Focus on your basic courses. Focus on preparing for the bar. Everything else will fall into place.
Good luck in the future.
